Kneighborhood Knives is a mobile sharpening studio providing premier sharpening services to homes, food trucks, and restaurants.

My passion is restoring the edge on knives and tools using the highest quality techniques based on an extensive background in traditional hand sharpening on whetstones.

In addition to accepting drop-offs in SE Portland, I make house calls to homes & businesses and host knife sharpening pop-up events regularly.

Why whetstones?

All knives are hand-finished on whetstones, regardless of which sharpening service you select

Traditional hand sharpening on whetstones is undoubtedly the highest quality method of sharpening knives. Because each step of the sharpening process is tailored to the knife - from the coarseness and material of the stone to the angle of the knife’s bevels - the blade is able to maintain a geometry and finish that is most conducive to the knife’s performance, aesthetic, and longevity.

Electric sharpeners, pull-through sharpeners, and grinders remove more material than necessary and provide a heavy-handed approach that often results in irreversible flat spots, areas of buildup (especially towards the heel), scratchy edges, angles that do not align with the knife’s purpose, and most importantly, a shorter lifespan for the knife.

Whetstone sharpening, on the other hand, is a nuanced, intentional, and sustainable approach that is respectful of a blade’s purpose and function and leaves the knife with a custom-tailored and beautifully finished edge.

In my Standard Sharpening service, I begin with a custom system of low-speed, water-cooled belts and rotary stones and finish on whetstones.

And of course, I offer Whetstone-Exclusive Sharpening - this is recommended for all Japanese knives.
